New Location for 4th Annual Because You Care Cup

SYDNEY, N.S – Cape Breton’s Largest Road Hockey Tournament is Adopting a New Home!

Committee members, sponsors, and supporters of the Because You Care Cup gathered in Membertou on Tuesday morning for an exciting announcement.

The 4th Annual Because You Care Cup, presented by title sponsor AuCoin Renovations and Advanced Insulation Services, will be held in a new location this year. The largest road hockey tournament on the island will take place in Membertou this September.

"The community of Membertou is very excited to be the new home of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation's Because You Care Cup,” said Chief Terry Paul, CEO of Membertou. “We are pleased to welcome all organizers and participants to enjoy the tournament in Membertou and to make a positive impact on healthcare in Cape Breton."

This year the tournament will support priority equipment, a new EEG machine for the Neurology department at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. The EEG machine is critical to measure brain function and is used in an urgent situation after a period of unconsciousness from trauma such as a car accident, heart attack or seizure - the EEG machine is especially important for patients with epilepsy. The EEG machine is also important to patients who have suffered a stroke in order to measure damage that has occurred to the brain and is used for patients of all ages.

“Being able to watch young and old alike come together to get active and support a great cause is really what this event is all about,” said event co-chair Dave Curnew.

As Cape Breton’s largest road hockey tournament, the event has raised over $262,000 for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital over the past 3 years.

Since 1995, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, in partnership with the community has raised more than $35 million to purchase equipment, and fund upgrades at the Regional Hospital. Thanks to the generosity of the community, The Foundation can purchase medical equipment that will dramatically reduce wait times and provide an increased menu of services – closer to home.
