Cape Breton Physicians Come Together to Support Healthcare through “Doctor’s Care” Campaign

SYDNEY, N.S – For the first time in more than twenty years, doctors in Cape Breton are coming together to support local hospitals – working to strengthen healthcare for all Cape Bretoners. The “Doctor’s Care” Campaign, led by veteran physician Dr. Bob Cohen, includes a committee of dedicated physicians who are coming together to not only speak to the importance of giving back locally, but reaching out to their peers to take part in supporting our hospitals.

The campaign, which officially launches this month, has already generated incredible success with donations from the Doctor’s Care Committee. More than $125,000 has been raised by the committee to kick-start the campaign and the committee is looking forward to reaching out to other physicians in the community to step up and also pledge to support healthcare in Cape Breton.

“As physicians, we have made our life’s work in Cape Breton,” explains Dr. Bob Cohen, chair of the Doctor’s Care Campaign. “For the first time since the Cape Breton Regional Hospital was built, more than 20 years ago, we are asking doctors in our community to come together to make a contribution to an area of care that is important to them, ensuring we can provide excellence for our patients.”

Physicians will have the opportunity to support an area of care that they feel connected to, or to support the fundraising efforts of the Area of Greatest Need fund, which allows the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation to provide support for priority equipment, as well as, other priority areas like mental health and addictions.

“We are thrilled about the response from the campaign already,” says Brad Jacobs, CEO Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. “We are fortunate to have passionate and talented doctors to provide world-class care here in Cape Breton, and to see them come together under the leadership of Dr. Cohen to strengthen healthcare for Cape Bretoners shows their commitment to their patients and our community as a whole.”

Dr. Bob Cohen expresses his gratitude to committee members and to his colleagues, who have already stepped up to support the campaign. “We are looking forward to a successful campaign, and it is our hope that because this is an initiative that hasn’t happened for so many years, that doctors will consider giving in a big way – because as the needs in Cape Breton continue to grow, their support is needed now more than ever.”

The Doctor’s Care Campaign Committee, headed by Dr. Bob Cohen, is made up of doctors from across the CBRM including, Dr. Dale Miller (Medical Site Lead), Dr. Rex Dunn (Honorary Chair), Dr. Gail Bisson (Sydney), Dr. Peter Littlejohn (New Waterford), Dr. Dorothy Dolhanty (Sydney), Dr. Michael Gallivan (Glace Bay), Dr. Jeff Power (Membertou), Dr. Paul Hickey (North Sydney), Dr. Siva Thanamayooran (Sydney).

Physicians looking to take part in this campaign can get in touch with Dr. Bob Cohen, or call the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, 902-567-7752.
