NuStar Energy Raises $115,000 for Cancer Patient Care Fund and Caleb’s Courage

With golfers from all over North America in Dundee on Friday, a big impact was made across all of Cape Breton. On Friday, the NuStar Energy Fairways to Success Golf Tournament raised $115,000 to support the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation’s Cancer Patient Care Fund and the Caleb’s Courage.

"We were thrilled to be invited back to this incredible event for a second year,” said Nicole MacArthur, Caleb’s mother. “Once again, the NuStar team has gone above and beyond to embrace Caleb’s superhero spirit & our ever-growing movement. Thanks to their tremendous generosity, we will be able to provide more support for critically ill children and their families in Cape Breton. It is an honour to work with a company that is so passionate about giving back to their own community.”

Last year, in addition to their generous donation from the tournament of $115,000, the Cape Breton company sponsored the Because You Care Cup Road Hockey tournament and gave a gift an additional of $5,000 to the Cancer Patient Care Fund at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. In 2015, they generously donated $20,000 to support the purchase of a new linear accelerator for the Cape Breton Cancer Centre.

“At NuStar, the healthcare of our community is very important. The Cancer Patient Care Fund and Caleb’s Courage are causes that touch just about everybody in Cape Breton,” said NuStar representative, Chelsey MacEachern. “Our employees give back their time and resources to countless worthy causes and giving back means the world to us. Our employees make the decision to give back, knowing that it could be them in need of the support someday.”

The Cancer Patient Care Fund provides financial assistance to cancer patients at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre during treatment. The fund provides support to patients who need help with the cost of travelling for care, medical costs, lodging and in dire situations, household costs.

“The Cancer Patient Care Fund is 100% donor funded and does not exist without the support of generous community groups and businesses like NuStar,” explained Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation CEO, Brad Jacobs. “We are very grateful for their dedication to patients in Cape Breton.”

Caleb’s Courage was created with love by Caleb’s parents as a way to honour their son, and, with the help of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, to make a positive impact in healthcare for families all over Cape Breton Island. “Helping Little Superheroes Fighting BIG Battles” is their mission and their mandate is to provide support for critically ill children & their families by enhancing the services, programs, & facilities for “Pediatric Palliative Care & Oncology” in Cape Breton.

Since 1990, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, in partnership with the community has raised more than $50 million to purchase equipment, and fund upgrades at the Regional Hospital. The Foundation has recently been accredited under Imagine Canada’s national Standards Program, which promotes transparency of charities and nonprofits, and strengthens public confidence in organizations and the sector as a whole.
